This week, I've been watching a lot of videos on the impact music therapy has on people and how much of a difference it can actually make in a patients life. It's really amazing to see how it can help during the recovery process. One video stuck out to me.
June, a patient at St. Louis' Children's Hospital, suffered a coma after her body went into septic shock. She fought for her life in the PICU for two weeks alongside many doctors, and one supporting music therapist, Christy Merrell. After being diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, it was very hard on her family emotionally. But, with the help and support of a music therapist along the way, it became a lot easier to cope during this very hard and confusing time.
And here I thought that Kawasaki was a Japanese motorcycle company. I had never heard of this disease. I watched the video and was amazed at how June, in her terrible time of sickness, responded more to the music than to her mother's voice!
